The stone
Two beams from one.
The VAN TOL Stone is doubly refractive. Every ray of light that enters it is split in two and travels on along two separate paths. What you see is not one flash but two, offset by a hair — and that is what makes the light restless, almost flickering, never quite still when your hand moves.
Then there is its dispersion: 0.104. That number describes how strongly a stone breaks white light into its colours. With the VAN TOL Stone a candle is enough, a street lamp, the screen of a phone — and what comes back out is red, green, blue. The word for it is fire, and here it is meant literally.
Hardness 9.25. It is grown in a laboratory under controlled conditions, from silicon carbide. Its origin is not a guess. It is a record.
